In this post I compared 13 decent free fonts websites, they all have relatively huge collection of free fonts, and some of the sites have been around for a long time. Who is the best? What are the features of these websites. Here is my comparison and opinion to share. I believe we only need the good sites and not to waste time on a huge list of resource.
Criteria:
I compared them on following aspects:
- Font library size: if they have numerous font for us
- Basic font availability: Do they have free sans serif and serif fonts.
- Creative font availability: Fonts from Movies, TV and Logos.
- Web design and usability: if the website is easy to navigate
- Search engine rank: if we search a font would this site be on top of Google list
Comparison:
- Dafont – Pros: Good web design, easy to navigate, a lot of creative fonts available and it is one of the most popular sources of free fonts. Cons: dafont’s free font stock is rather limited. It takes you to Myfont for commercial fonts.
- Better Fonts – Pros: Over 10,000 free fonts, gives you dummy text for preview by default. Cons: Not many free basic fonts available
- Fawnt – Pros:Over 9,000 fonts, easy navigation, detailed listing on font type. Cons: The font library size is a bit smaller than the rest websites here and there is no way to preview the font.
- Fontriver -Pros: huge library of free fonts and updates frequently. Cons: They are mostly new and creative fonts not many free basic fonts avalable and there is no preview function.
- Searchfreefont -Pros: Huge library of free fonts, nicely designed website, nice preview function, list of typography details. Cons:it takes you to purchuse fonts on myfont whenever it is not available on their site.

- Daily Free Fonts – Pros:Thousands of free fonts, and you can input your text for preview. Cons: Too many ads on the site.
- 1001 Free Fonts – Pros: Nicely categorized, updates frequently. Cons:preview function refreshes the entire page, not many free basic fonts available.
- 1001 Fonts – Pros: Nicely categorized, huge font preview. Cons: Not many free basic fonts available
- The Font Pool – Pros:Over 40,000 fonts, preview all fonts with custom text. Cons:It takes you to purchuse fonts on myfont whenever it is not available on their site.
- SimplyTheBestFonts – Pros: Huge library of free fonts, a lot of different categories to choose from, many TV show and movie fonts available. Cons: some fonts only available for PC, no preview, no search.
- Fonts 500 – Pros: The web’s top 500 free fonts, preview all fonts with custom text. Cons: library size is rather small, not easy to navigate.
- FontCubes – Pros: Over 9,000 free fonts, nicely designed website, updates regularly, detailed listing on font type. Cons: Not very easy to reach through search engine.
Conclusion

The Winner is FontCubes. We all know there is no free classic fonts like swiss 921, at least fontcubes doesnt pretend they have those kind of fonts and direct you to Myfont. Nicely designed site with no unnecessary AD, simplified category to avoid confusion, and preview function with color change. Most importantly it pays respect to designers by list them in a category. This is only my opinion on font websites, if you have other thoughts welcome to disscus. All opinions are welcomed.
